Please Help Us Provide our Heroes a Safe Place to Call Home!

According to the Department of Veterans Affairs, numbers released in January 2014 show nearly 50,000 Aghanistan and Iraq veterans were either homeless or in a federal program aimed at keeping them off the streets in 2013. This is nearly triple the number in 2011, an increase that can be attributed to several socioeconomic factors. The latest generation of veterans serve multiple deployments which can cause mental health issues such as PTSD after which they return home to changed families, a lagging economy and rising housing costs. Most experts believe the already critical shortage of housing targeting homeless and at-risk veterans will reach a crisis stage in the coming years as increasing numbers of veterans return home from combat duty.

No veteran who has served their country should be living in fear on the streets, without hope or security. It has long been Allen’s vision to build a 50 unit homeless veterans housing facility in Evergreen to provide our struggling heroes a place to call home. Northwest Montana Veterans’ Stand Down and Food Pantry is currently raising funds to purchase a building site and erect a 34,000 square foot building complete with on-site management, kitchen and recreational common areas and office space for veteran representatives. The permanent wing would house 18 single male veterans, 12 couples, 5 single females and 5 families while the transitory section would be able handle 3 veterans and their families for a maximum occupancy of 62 persons. Our goal is to have the facility open and serving the Flathead Valley in 2016 but we need the community’s help to make this vision a reality.
